Seaford Family Saved By Smoke Detectors
The Seaford Fire Department responded to a working fire on Friday, January 9th at 0615 hours at 2218 Wasall St.. 2nd Assistant Chief Podesta was first on scene and transmitted a Signal 10. Chief of Department Lochner arrived soon after and assumed command. Heavy fire was showing from 3 sides and all floors of the two story home. The home was occupied by a family of five at the time of the fire. The family was awakened by smoke detectors and was able to escape the home. The fire originated in the basement due to a faulty gas heater. The heavy fire load in the basement caused a partial collapse of the 1st floor into the basement which hindered firefighting efforts. Firefighters were also confronted with extremely low temperatures and gusty winds.
The Red Cross provided temporary housing and cloths for the family. Almost immediately after the fire, the Seaford community came to the aid of the family by providing money, clothing, food and housing.
Units operating at the fire were; Seaford Chiefs 6800 & 6802, Engine 682, Ladder 683 and ambulance 685. Mutual aid was provided by Wantagh FD (2 Chiefs, one engine and one ladder), Massapequa FD (1 Chief , one engine, one ladder and one ambulance), North Massapequa FD (1 Chief, one ladder and one engine) and Bellmore FD (1 Chief and one ladder). Mutual aid operated at the scene and covered Seaford HQ's. (Photos by Ex-Captain Robinson)
